Over time, muscles can become stiff through long periods of use and intense/repetitive exercise. These circumstances can lead to layers of tissue becoming physically adhered to each other reducing the range of movement available. Also, prolonged muscular activity leads to a accumulation of waste products leading to a dull achy pain.
Deep tissue massage is a focused treatment addressing deep and long standing muscular tension. The therapist uses a range of hands on techniques to improve blood flow, stretch muscle fibres, enhance drainage of waste products and relax the body. Deep tissue massage is ideal for managing these achy pains and can be used in conjunction with other treatments to help resolve the overall issue.
What’s the difference – Sports Massage vs Deep Tissue Massage
What you may feel can be similar but the main difference is the practitioner. Therapists trained in Sports Massage have a wider understanding of human anatomy and physiology as well as being able to perform a wide range of techniques. They may perform a postural assessment in the session to help target the areas of issue.
What to expect
This type of treatment isn’t for the faint-hearted. Therapists will use a combination of deep hands on techniques that can be painful. You are always in control of the depth of the treatment, so please do let your therapist know if you the pressure levels need adjusting.
What to bring
Ideally some loose fitting clothing or something you are happy to dress down to. The rest comes down to relaxing and getting the best out of the experience. If you have any information from a clinician regarding your visit please bring it with you.
