Plantar Fasciitis

What is it?

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue (fascia) that connects the heal bone to the toes. This tissue supports the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber as we move allowing the stretch a recoil of the foot as we walk or run. Excess tension and stress, when placed on the fascia can cause small tears to occur; repeated stretching and tearing can lead to inflammation and irritation.

Symptoms

  • Stabbing pain, typically near the heal, that is worse after sleeping or resting but eases as you move
  • Difficulty raising your toes off the floor

Causes

  • Age- its more common between the age of 40-60
  • Certain sporting activities such as long distance running and ballet dancing
  • Foot biomechanics – flat been, a high arch or an altered gait can add stress to the fascia
  • Obesity
  • Occupations where standing for long periods can occur, especially if the floor is very hard.
